Member subscriptions due by 31st July 2026 If you have not done so already, please pay your annual membership subscriptions in full, by electronic transfer or cheque to Royal Hospital School Golfing Society, as soon as possible. Your prompt payment is appreciated. On receipt of payment your new 2026/27 sticker will be given or posted to you to apply to your bag tag. We respectfully remind members that their bag tags must to visible at all times when on the course. If payments are not received by the deadline your membership will be deemed to have lapsed and a new application will be required. |

Course safety Before playing any shot, golfers are reminded of the need to take care to ensure that players in the group in front, ground staff and other people, who might be on the course, are safely out of range. Particular care is required on the 7th tee and fairway where people might be out of view in the dip or beyond the trees. |

| Regular informal member groups All Society members are welcome to join in the regular informal groups which are listed below. This is an opportunity to meet other members and enjoy playing the course. Please add your name to the Tee booking schedule and turn up at the meeting times indicated below. Wednesday morning meet in car park at 9.45am. Sunday morning meet in car park at 8.45am for 18 holes or 9.45am for 9 holes, apart from the last Sunday in each month when the Society usually holds competitions, which are indicated in the events section below and on the Tee booking schedule. These rounds are usually followed up with a gathering at the King's Head in Stutton, which has become the Society's 19th hole. There has been a Saturday morning roll up in the past and if there is sufficeint interest this could be restarted. Please let the Society Captain know if you are interested. |

Course care All golfers are reminded to please take care of the course for the benefit of everyone using the course by diligently carrying out the following quick and simple measures: Repairing pitch marks on the greens - A golf ball pitch mark that is unrepaired will not recover for several months whereas a repaired pitch mark is not detectable after a week. Replacing divots on the tees and fairways - Likewise this will give the grass a much better chance of recovery. Protecting young trees - If your ball is in close proximity to any of these young plants then you must take a free drop (within 2 club lengths but not nearer the hole). Using the tee mats - To preserve the tee boxes from excessive damage please play from the mats when indicated by the white or yellow flags. Retrieving wooden and plastic tees plus any provisional or practice golf balls - Golf tees and balls are not environmentally friendly and can be damaging to wildlife and equipment. |

Green fees Please remember when you have guests playing green fees must be paid and the guests' names entered on the booking schedule before the round. The fees are £5 for 9 holes and £10 for 18 holes. |

Entry To Club Competitions For entry to all Trophy Competitions those competing will have to have entered a minimum of 3 qualifying competitions in the previous 12 months. These can be any of the monthly stapleford competitions midweek/last Sunday or one of the competitions where handicaps are adjusted (not match play comps). Members who have not achieved this can still take part in competitions but of course cannot win said competition. |

| Society insurance The insurance cover arranged by the society provides personal liability and personal accident cover for insured members whilst playing at any golf club in the UK and up to 120 days abroad. If any members would like a copy of the insurance documents please contact the society treasurer. Please note it is important that you pay your membership subscription on time to renew your membership otherwise the insurance cover might not apply. |

| Sunday 19/7/26 | 3 Clubs Challenge Trophy Many people struggle to make a choice and the competition on Sunday 19th July forced us to choose 3 clubs and a putter. A lot of "if only" and "next time" were heard at the King's Head afterwards as the choice of the 3 clubs were discussed by some. Not by Nick Corder though, as he managed a fantastic 38 points to win this year's trophy. Congratulations to him and better luck next year to those whose choices didn't work out! | Sunday 12/7/26 | Tony Cairns Memorial Trophy On Sunday July 12th society members gathered in glorious weather to compete for the Tony Cairns Trophy in memory of one of our founding members. The competition is between the Chairman's team and the Captain's team. The format is unusual in being of three varieties in one round. Six holes each of Foursomes, Greensomes and Better ball. The Chairman partnered this years vice-captain against the captain, Clive Rennison and Mike Suckling, another founder member, and it was obvious from his performance that Gordon was keen to repeat last year's victory over then captain Nick Corder. He had obviously rallied his troops well and the Chairman's team prevailed in a strong showing to retain the Trophy. As part of the event a small charitable raffle was held and as a result the Society donated £155 to the MS Society. An excellent end to a very enjoyable event. | Sunday 28/6/26 | Monthly Competition The June stableford took place on Sunday 28th in perfect weather conditions and the greens were in their best shape of the season. Those who took part enjoyed the conditions and for the most part took advantage of them. None more so than Keith Last who won with a tremendous 43 points pipping Shaun Gadsby with 42, with Mark Rice in third on 37. Nearest the pin on the 8th proved elusive, but Eamonn Gilgar put his shot nearest the flag on the 15th. Clive Rennison Captain |
| Wednesday 17/6/26 | Monthly mid-week Competition The June midweek stableford competition took place on Wednesday 17th, 20 members took part, an excellent turn out. The course looked in very good shape and the greens much improved. 1st place went to Mark Rice with 37 pts, runner up was Keith Last with 36 pts and 3rd was John Keeble with 34 pts. A high number scored 30pts plus so hopefully testament to the improved condition of the course. Nearest pin on hole 6 was Doody ( Roger Goodchild ) with no claimants on hole13. Nick Corder |
| Sunday 31/5/26 | Monthly Competition May's stableford competition was held on Sunday 31st with 22 members taking part. The weather was excellent and, while the greens are still improving, the delineation of the fairways and rough is making the course look fantastic. Nearest the pin on the 4th was Mark Rice and on the 15th Tony Wright. Third place went to Paul Unsworth, second was our Chairman Gordon Smith and the winner was Ian Roberts. Clive Rennison Captain |
| Wednesday 20/5/26 | Monthly mid-week Competition A Stableford competition was played on Wednesday 20th May. The fairways on the longer holes had been widened though the rough was severe. The scoring was extremely close between the first five, winning on Countback with 34 pts was Shaun Gadsby, 2nd Mark Rice and 3rd Keith Last both on 34 pts. Nearest pin on hole 6 was Dave Wood and on hole 10 Catriona Herbert. Nick Corder |
| Sunday 26/4/26 | Captain's drive in and Stableford competition On Sunday 26th April, in bright sunshine, new Captain Clive Rennison drove the season off with the first monthly stableford. A good turn out in beautiful spring conditions had to play straight to avoid some lush rough, whilst perhaps enjoying the added distance of the firm fairways. Tony Wright was closest with his marker to the Captain's drive. The Stableford Competition winner with a 37 point haul was Eamonn Gilgar with John Keeble and Patsy Grimsey finishing second and third respectively. Their scores were very creditable as the greens proved fast and tricky. Nearest the pin on hole 10 was Keith Last and on hole 15 Colin Scott. This season the captain's charity is Fore Get Me Not Golf. https://www.foregetmenotgolf.co.uk This charity supports those with dementia. Money was raised for the charity via the drive-in and with some generous donations, fund raising has started with £54. Thanks to those who took part. | Sunday 29/3/26 | Monthly Competition My last competition as Captain was supported by an excellent 31 members, a great way to bring the curtain down on what has been a successful and rewarding year. It has been a privilege and honour to serve as Captain of the RHS Golfing Society and I wish Clive Rennison the very best in his role of Captain. The course played well and thanks are due to Steve Mutton and his team for the way the course had been presented. Russell Gadsby with a score of 39 pts was the winner on countback from Rex Holland with Graham Smith in 3rd on 38 pts. There were three scores of 37 pts so many handicap cuts. Nearest pin on hole 8 was Rex Holland with Russell Gadsby nearest on hole 15, much nearer and it would have been an expensive day. Nick Corder Captain |
| Wednesday 25/3/26 | Awayday at Felixstowe Golf Club 23 members took part in an away day at Felixstowe Golf Club on Wednesday 25th March. Although the course was in excellent condition, due to gusty winds the course showed its teeth and many struggled to score well. Eamonn Gilgar and John Keeble did not follow the script with Eamonn scoring an excellent 37 pts to win the event with John Keeble runner up with 35 pts. There were three nearest pins, Paul Unsworth on hole 5, John Scoines on hole 9 and hole 12 Russell Gadsby. | Wednesday 18/3/26 | Monthly mid-week Competition The monthly midweek stableford finally took place for the first time this year. Fifteen members took part with much improved conditions. Scoring was close with Simon Wood in 1st place with 39 pts, in 2nd Chris Herbert with 38 pts and in 3rd Shaun Gadsby with 37 pts on countback from Keith Last. | Sunday 1/03/26 | Winter pairs final round The winter pairs drew to a close on 1st March with the final round of four, having begun in November. The best three rounds from four were taken into account resulting in joint winners: 1st Clive Rennison / Eamonn Gilgar 126 pts (42 - 43 - 41 ) and Steve Hart / Graham Smith 126 pts ( 43 - 40 - 43 ) 3rd Richard Lawson / Mike Suckling 124 pts ( 42 - 38 - 44 ) Congratulations to all Nick Corder Captain |

In what was a close affair, Mark Rice prevailed with a winning score of 36 points with Eamonn Gilgar and Doody scoring 35 points, Eamonn 2nd on countback. | Golfing Society member of the year 2025 In recognition of the big undertaking as Membership secretary and dealing with the Society's insurance John Mellis has been recognised as the RHS Golfing Society Member of the year for 2025. | Sunday 28/12/25 | Monthly Competition The December Stableford was replaced with a Texas Scramble, played on Sunday 28th December. This proved popular as 28 members took part, which allowed for 7 groups. Special thanks to Doug Barwick and Graham Smith who once again arrived early and swished the greens. The winning team with a net score of 53.9 was Richard Lawson, Catriona Herbert, Simon Wood and Eamonn Gilgar. | Sunday 30/11/25 | Monthly Competition The monthly stableford competition took place on, thankfully, a dry Sunday morning and was well contested by 19 members, especially at the top of the leaderboard. The winner on 33pts was Keith Last on countback from Shaun Gadsby. 3rd place was Tony Wright on 32 pts again on countback from Eamonn Gilgar, Russell Gadsby and Glen Last. The course is just about holding up following the recent rain and, in the circumstances, the scoring was good. Nearest the pin on hole 6 was Tony Wright and on hole 10 Steve Hart. | Friday 14/11/23 | Annual Presentation evening The presentation evening took place on Friday 14th November at the King's Head. Thank you to those members and partners who attended. Trophies and prizes were presented to the winners and runners up by the Captain, ably assisted by Gordon Smith and David Stuart-Thompson. | Wednesday 29/10/25 | Monthly mid-week Competition Midweek Stableford took place on Wednesday 29th October with 17 members taking part. | Sunday 26/10/25 | Monthly Competition The monthly stableford took place on a cold yet bright Sunday morning. Twenty two members took part in relatively tough conditions. The winner with an excellent 37 pts was Eamonn Gilgar. There were three players on 33 pts with 2nd place going to Shaun Gadsby and 3rd to Russell Gadsby, with Doug Barwick just outside of the first three. | Sunday 19/10/25 | The Society Championships The Society's Championships took place on Sunday 19th October with 26 members taking part. The course was well prepared by the RHS ground staff and appreciation also for the work undertaken on the greens to improve the condition as well as possible. Special thanks to Doug Barwick and Graham Smith for their early start in clearing the greens of debris. Champion golfer of the year is John Keeble with a gross score of 74, runner up, Steve Hart on countback from Richard Lawson and Paul Unsworth with a score of 77. Winner of the trophy for lowest net score was Roger Goodchild (Doody) with a score of 64 winning on countback from Graham Smith. | Sunday 1/10/25 | Summer Knockout competitions The summer Knockout competitions reached their conclusion on 1st October. Congratulations to Sarah Fordham and Mark Rice who defeated Catriona and Chris Herbert 5 and 4 in the summer pairs. | Sunday 28/9/25 | Monthly Competition The monthly Stableford was contested by 21 members, with over half the field scoring 30 pts or more on greens that remain unpredictable, though the course in general played well. The winner, with a score of 37 pts was John Keeble winning on countback from Russell Gadsby with David Stuart-Thompson in 3rd on 35 pts again on countback from Nick Corder. Keeping up his run of good form was our winner Shaun Gadsby with a score of 36 pts, in 2nd Eamonn Gilgar with 34 pts and in 3rd Catriona Herbert on 31 pts. | Monday 22/9/25 | Awayday at Hintlesham Golf Club The society away day took place at Hintlesham Golf Club on Monday 22nd September. Twenty of our members took part in five groups of four. The weather was excellent and the course also. Bacon rolls and coffee/tea on arrival went down well. The scoring was very good from the prize winners with Catriona Herbert winning on countback from Eamonn Gilgar on 41 pts, in 3rd place Paul Unsworth on 39 pts. | Sunday 31/8/25 | Monthly Competition Monthly stableford was held on Sunday 31st August with 18 members taking part. Scores in general were pretty good taking into account putting on unpredictable greens. The winner on the day was our Chairman, Gordon Smith, with 36 pts, in 2nd was Mike Suckling with 33 pts and 3rd on countback Russell Gadsby with 32 pts. | Sunday 24/8/25 | 3 Clubs Challenge Trophy Sunday 24th August saw the 3 club plus putter challenge, 23 members took part. The fast and unpredictable greens played a big part, however Mark Rice managed an excellent 37pts, despite no score on two consecutive holes on the back 9, well done Mark. Runner up was Paul Unsworth with a highly credible 36 pts. Nearest the Pin on hole 4 was Ian Roberts and on hole 13, Simon Wood. Amongst those who played was Tony Wright who showed everyone how it is done! Tony top scored with 37 pts, also adding nearest pin on holes 6 and 13. | Sunday 10/8/25 | Under and over 15 handicap competitions Thank you to those of you who supported today's competition. Congratulations to the winner of the under 15, Clive Rennison on countback with 36 pts and to the runner-up Russell Gadsby. | Sunday 27/7/25 | Monthly Competition The monthly Stableford took place on Sunday 27th July, twenty members participated. The outright winner was Shaun Gadsby with 36 pts, tight for 2nd and third with four on 34 pts. On countback Richard Lawson came 2nd with Keith Last 3rd, closely followed by Ian Roberts and Mark Rice. | Wednesday 23/07/25 | Wednesday Warrior Competition Sixteen members took part in the Warriors Challenge Trophy on Wednesday 23rd July. Most of the field scored thirty points plus on greens, slick and difficult to assess. The overall winner with a score of 38 pts was Laurie Justice, in 2nd place Eamonn Gilgar 37 pts and 3rd with 35 pts Shaun Gadsby. | Wednesday 16/07/25 | Monthly mid-week Competition The monthly midweek stableford competition took place on Wednesday 16th July, 13 members took part. There were some good scores in playing conditions that have improved immeasurably since the cutting of the rough, the fast greens which were somewhat bare due to the dry weather. The competition was won by Sarah Fordham with 37 pts, 2nd on 35 pts Eamonn Gilgar and 3rd Richard Watson with 34 pts. | Sunday 13/7/25 | Tony Cairns Memorial Trophy On Sunday 13th July the Tony Cairns shield was played for between the Chairman's and Captain's teams, consisting of 28 members playing in pairs in three formats, foursomes, greensomes and better ball. The support on the day was very much appreciated. The Chairman's team prevailed and in the seven matches played won five to the Captain's team two. Keith Last kindly organised the teams and playing format, special thanks to him. The importance of the day cannot be overstated, Tony Cairns was both founder and past chairman of the RHS Golfing Society, it was his perseverance that was instrumental in forming the society. This was the 25th year that the shield had been played for and Kevan Cairns, Tony's son and past member, kindly presented the shield to our Chairman, Gordon Smith, at the King's Head who duly thanked his team members and everyone for supporting the event. In reference to Kevan, the members kindly raised £157 towards MS research. In conclusion Best of luck to Clive Rennison, Vice-Captain when the next renewal takes place in 2026. Nick Corder Captain

| Sunday 6/7/25 | Keith Chittock Dedication On Sunday 6th July 2025, 28 golfers played in a charity Texas Scramble, won by Dave, Simon and Sam Wood along with Clive Rennison. After we were joined by the family and friends of Keith Chittock as a plaque on the Founders' memorial bench was dedicated in memory of Chit. He was a founder member, 2 times captain and long time committee member. £210 was collected and donated to Cancer Research in his memory. Fortunately, the weather just held and we were able to unveil his plaque and after share happy memories of a very popular friend and supporter of the Society. Gordon Smith Chairman

| Sunday 29/6/25 | Monthly Competition The monthly stableford took place on Sunday 29th June with 20 members taking part in hot conditions. The course showing a great deal of improvement after the 2nd cutting of rough. Understandably the greens and fairways are extremely dry with only a small chance of rain in the immediate future. The winner with 38 pts was Steve Hart on countback from Nick Corder, in 3rd place Graham Smith with 35 pts. There were two nearest pins, the 4th won by Nick Corder and the 15th by Tony Wright. | Wednesday 18/06/25 | Monthly mid-week Competition Monthly midweek stableford took place on Wednesday 18th June, for various reasons a small field of eight took part. Reasonable scoring nonetheless with Peter Gosling emerging as the winner with an excellent 38pts with Nick Corder runner up on 35 pts. There were two nearest pins, both won by Nick Corder. | Wednesday 25/6/25 | Don Whitby Memorial Shield On Wednesday June 25th an RHS Golfing Society team played the RHS for the Don Whitby Memorial Shield. This was the first time the trophy was played for since 2018. The match was played in glorious sunshine with very slick greens. In a young RHS team there were some very low handicappers, which allowed some of the society players to receive shots for the first time for a long while! The Headmaster welcomed the players and started off proceedings with a ceremonial first drive. Four four-balls played and in some closely fought matches the Society came out on top in two matches, lost one on the last hole and halved the other. Result Society 2.5 v School 1.5. This was an excellent and very enjoyable match. Clive Rennison

| Sunday 25/5/25 | Monthly Competition Monthly stableford was played in reasonable weather though the rough as usual played a part in some of the scoring. Despite this there were a number of scores in the 30s from the 27 members that took part. The result was as close as it has been for sometime with three players scoring 37 pts. Simon Wood won on countback from Sarah Fordham who in turn came 2nd from Catriona Herbert in 3rd place. There were two nearest the pins, Catriona closest on the 4th and Ian Whitty closest on the 10th. June is a relatively quiet month for competitions so an opportunity for summer pairs and singles matches to take place. Nick Corder Captain |
| Wednesday 21/05/25 | Monthly mid-week Competition Monthly midweek stableford competition took place in testing conditions with a somewhat depleted strike force of eleven members. | Sunday 18/5/25 | Greensome Pairs Competition Glen Last organised a Greensomes Pairs Competition, a fundraiser on behalf of his daughter, Darcie who attends the Anderson Dance School. Darcie had qualified for the World freestyle finals at Winter Gardens in Blackpool, one of 12 pupils. The idea was to raise money towards team costumes. A great success on the day with 24 members taking part, duly won by Sarah Fordham and Eamonn Gilgar with runners up the Gadsby brothers, Shaun and Russell. | Sunday 27/4/25 | Monthly Competition Monthly Medal took place on Sunday 27th April in bordering on tricky conditions from the fast growing rough on several holes. Despite this there were some excellent scores from the prize winners. 1st Eamonn Gilgar ( Net 60 ), 2nd Glen Last ( Net 61 ) and 3rd Shaun Gadsby (Net 63 ). | Sunday 20/4/25 | Easter Texas Scramble Competition Many thanks to those members who took part in the Texas Scramble competition. There were seven teams in a shotgun start. The event was closely contested, winners were D Barwick, S Fordham and D and S Stewart Thompson, with 53.5 net score and second N Corder, E Gilgar, L Justice and S Gadsby with 55. | Wednesday 16/04/25 | Monthly mid-week Competition The April Midweek Stableford attracted 14 members in windy conditions, however, despite the wind there were some decent scores in the 30s, with Shaun Gadsby, Dave Wood and Peter Gosling all scoring 33 pts. Not following the script was Eamonn Gilgar who with 39pts was the comfortable winner and duly had his handicap cut, second was Shaun on countback from Dave. | Sunday 6/4/25 | Captain's drive in and Stableford competition Thank you very much to those of you who supported my inaugural Drive-In this morning, I was pleased with the outcome even if it did take three attempts to hit a reasonable drive on the 9th fairway. Mark Rice was closest with his marker and thank you all for the participation. The Stableford Competition that followed, played in sunny windy conditions, was duly won by Laurie Justice on 35 pts, 2nd with 34 pts Graham Smith on countback from Sarah Fordham. Nearest the pin on hole 6 was Laurie Justice and on hole 13 Catriona Herbert. Special thanks to Mark, Laurie and Graham for donating their prize money to my chosen charity, the "Darby Rimmer MND Foundation", which I am pleased to say with the help from all that played raised £67. The choice of charity was borne out by the inspiration of Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir, sadly passed away, and one of Ipswich Town's greatest players Marcus Stewart who is bravely battling the crippling disease Nick Corder Captain |
| September 2024 | Staverton golf tour The annual RHSGS tour took place over 3 days in September at Staverton Park Hotel and Golf Club, Northamptonshire. Twenty attended and played in challenging wet conditions on a very good and scenic course. Team and individual competitions were played each day with a champion golfer crowned as John Scoines with runner up Ian Whitty. A good time was had by all but, of course, what goes on tour stays on tour! A huge thank you goes to Keith Chittock for organising again despite being unable to attend. Here's to next year. | Wednesday 18/3/24 | Awayday at Felixstowe Golf Club My final away day organised at Felixstowe GC on the Martello course attracted 22 members. The weather and hospitality proved to be excellent. Clive Rennison was triumphant on 41 pts, 2nd Graham Smith 36pts, 3rd Paul Unsworth 35pts, and 4th Roger Goodchild 34pts. There were 4 N/pins S Hart, K Chittock, & C Rennison X2. | February and March 2024 | Wet weather closes golf course The end of month competition scheduled for Sunday 25th February was cancelled due to heavy rain, which necessitated the course closure. The same Issue arose with the mid-month competition on 13th March, which was cancelled due to course being saturated. Doug Barwick Captain |
